Mine is an early '78 build and it came with round. I changed them out to rectangular (almost square) after the 78.5s came out. I never did like the round lights in the first place.
I've won quite a few beers on wagers from people that don't know their trucks.

In 78 the rectangular headlights became stock on Ranger & Higher trim lines.

Only the *Custom* Trim line had Round headlights

Round lights put out a more perfect beam. That's why you see round lights in the super expensive HID lights seen in BMW, Audi, Benz etc...

unfortunately, they don't fill out the '78 headlight bucket quite as nicely...i'll sacrifice the perfection of my beam for a cool-looking face.

I think the nicest looking front end is with a chrome grill, chrome rectangular headlight surrounds and a chrome bumper. All stock ford stuff. I had this on my last truck and everyone in town wanted to buy it.

I never liked the round ones in that model year. They are cool on the pre 78 front ends, but not on the 78 and later.

I agree. The rectangular lights look great in the 78/79 grills. I prefer the 73-77 style grills. But I really don't like the looks of the round lights in the 78/79 grills . . . it just doesn't look right.

Just to be contrary, I like the round ones. They seem to show deer on the highway or in the ditch better than the square. Also I get alot of comments on the round ones. Also they are unique, there aren't to many trucks around anymore with them.

The rectangle lights in the rectangle buckets look ok, the round lights in the rectangle buckets look out of place. The nicest looking front end is the round lights with the round buckets.

I think I have a setup for round lights at home, I changed out one of my trucks from round to rectangular, I don't want them, I would get rid of them for shipping. I think it's all there except for the headlight itself, I just unbolted them and bolted in the rectangular setup. I should have the surrounds also.
