Ok, this is my Second time at posting a new thread in this forum so I hope this is not too many questions. I posted the originally in the wrong area...
I have a 97 explorer XLT with 4.0 SOHC and 110k miles. I had the codes checked and was told that I would have to get the Trany rebuilt. $2k+, could not get more details on what was included. I started towinga boat this last year, so suspect this aided in the trany problem. Hopefully this forum can help.
What kind of things should I ensure is being done/checked when having a trany rebuilt? I would like to take a list of items to get the final estimate. This is my first 4x4 and I know there are more to the drive train than the transmission. I don't want to take it back for another rebuild.
Is there an upgrade to a heavier duty trany or tranaxle?
Or should I consider looking for another? I considered looking for a V8 5.0. is there really much benefit? The 4.0 seems to pull ok. Does anyone have suggestions on performance enhancements that really work? There seems to be a lot of them advertised.
Ok, thanks in advance for any suggestions.<!-- / message -->
I plan to check with the transmission service to see what the rebuild intails. I was hoping someone here could give me an idea of what to ask, to ensure I am getting a good rebuild.
Sorry, no idea on tranny re-builds.
How big is your boat, weight of entire package incl any stowed gear?
I've been towing with my 97 XLT V8 5.0L AWD (99K miles), but I also had no issues towing with a V6 prior to that. The 97 has the tow package, plus Cl III hitch.
One question... aside from what someone told you the codes said, are you having any problems with the trans? If so, what are the problems? If not, consider resetting the codes and driving for awhile and then recheck the codes. If you are not experencing problems, why rebuild it?
What are you absing to descion to rebiuld on. Is there are problem or did someone pull a code and tell you it needed a rebuild. Also. I assume this is an auto tranny but best that I not assume. Please enlightend us.
I have a 96 4x4 with manual tranny and 4.0 enigne. I have had excellent service for this vehicel and drivetrain. No complaints whatsoever.
I reset the code twice by disconnecting the battery prior to taking it to the trany place.
The code 0741 - TCC stuck off/slips
They also listed , excess converter slip in L/U and
defective Torque converter.
Estimate has $835 for labor and $916 parts for the job.
What's the rest of the vehicle like. Good Condition? Everything works? Has it been well maintained? If no to anything above, I would have to consider junking it or selling it for whatever I could get.
Before junking it however, I would get a second and/or third opinion before replacing the transmission. You still have not told us if the transmission is acting up or if you are basing your need to rebuild on the computer codes. It could be something real simple like a vacuum leak of bad fluid and the tranny shop wants to get paid for replacing a perfectly good transmission. You need to tell us what's going on for us to help.
The saga just keeps getting better. I was out of town and the trany went. I backed up and noticed that when I started forward it seemed to shutter. Well 10 miles later, it would hardly pull a small hill without the engine reving up. Pulled into a autoparts store to check fluid. It was fine, but could not backup. After 30 minutes I could backup, but no drive or 1st gear, 2nd still worked. Called wife to get me and waited. Towing costs were about $400+ so found a local trany place and left it there. Will find out tomorrow the extent of the damage. Hopefully no case damage and a normal $2k rebuild will bring it back.
To answer your question about the shape of the Explorer. It is in great shape. I use full Syn. 30w oil every 5k miles, and have not had any problems with the engine, other than some periodic shutdowns. I plan to change the AIC when it gets back. I figure 115k miles warrants a new one. Rather than cleaningit.
The only major problem is the windshield, the trim around the top came up and I have tried various sealers, but it still leaked, no I see stains inside from the leakage and it looks like the top right side of the windshield frame has peeled down to the metal and is rusting. Not sure if this can be fixed without replacing the windshield. Any suggestions?
Make sure you get a written warranty, and that it specifies what it covers. If it's not at least a 12 month warranty, consider taking it somewhere else. Also, make sure they check and replace any engine seals that may be suspect.
