While my 96 4.0L 4x4 5-spd was in the shop having the Timing Cover Gasket replaced, the mechanic said he heard a "thunk" in the oilpan. He said he couldnt' get the oilpan off without pulling the engine because of the 4 wheel drive stuff that was blocking the way. After pulling the engine, he said the oil pump had "broken off" and fell into the oil pan.
My questions are....
do oil pumps just "break" off?
do you have to pull the engine to get the oil pan off?
is there something he might have screwed up on while removing the timing cover that would have broke the oil pump off?

No they do not just break off! Most if not all oil pumps have a shear pin of some type to shear if the pump ever injests something it can not pump out and freezes up..
All pumps are bolted up tightly to the block and it would be very hard to break em off with a BFH..
I would go look at that bad boy and complain mightly about them doing whatever they did to your truck.. Don't pay! Send pictures.
