Hey guys and gals, I discovered your board last week when I was getting ready to change my oilpan gasket. I spent the weekend in this florida heat following Haynes manual. Pulled radiator, jacked motor etc but couldn't get pan all the way off. I removed the oil sump tube (as told by book) replaced gasket and torqued it to spec (according to Haynes). Put it all back together and started motor. Loud tapping from what appears to be oil pan...maybe pump area. Tapping increases with speed of motor. It seemed to lessen after it let it run a few minutes but is still loud and worrisome. Somebody please help. Karl

Best advice is remove the oil pressure sending unit and install a number pressure gauge and verify the oil pressure is 40 to 60 Psi at idle . Only thing I can think of and this is only guessing is that the oil pump lost its prime . Im sure with the pan off most of the oil in the engine was lost . I wouldnt run the engine unnessecarily until you find the cause of the knocking . Its possible the inlet to the pump is partially obstructed too ?

I changed an oil pan in a v-8 once and somehow I got the dipstick bent up in to the crank and it made a heck of a racket. try pulling out the dipstick and seeing if it is all twisted up.
