I'm thinking about buying a 92 1 ton utility body 7.3. It has 120,000 miles.
I don't know the history of this truck, so if I assume that it has never had the coolant additive to prevent cavitation, is it worth the risk ($2500)?
Any guess on the odds of it being close to a major heart attack?
Would an oil analysis for metal content pick up antifreeze?
Besides blowing white smoke, what other symptoms would there be- run rough, no power, radical loss of coolant?
I haven't had to replace any blocks that new yet, but others have. The bad part is, they will run perfect and not miss a beat until it happens. There you are, in a rush to get going one morning, and it locks up on the starter!
Hit a Local Napa and buy some anti-freeze test strips and see what the coolant checks out like. That's about the only thing you can do to 'somewhat' help you on your gamble. If you do get it, make sure you get some Nalcool or Napakool or Ford's stuff in there pronto.
Just spend the 3 grand and get the ATS wastsgated kit for your existing engine, they work a lot better than the same kit Ford "dumbed down" for the 94s. The engines hold up fine under pressure.
Oil sampling will detect antifreeze - some sampling companies want you to indicate the fact that are in fact looking for antifreeze. Will also tell you if there is an internal problem even tho it may a little tuff to find being there nothing to compare . However, antifreeze in oil sample is wrong no matter if there is a comparison or not.
