hey guys new too board i have 90 f150 extended cab that my wife drives she has been whining about the stock sterio/cassette sound system the problem it is having is everything works fine except the display you cant see what channel its on or the time? it lights up some times but most of the time you cant see it is there any relay or somthing to fix this problem? please help me i dont want too have to go buy a new sterio system just for she will know what channel she is on or what time it is . thanks for any help, john
If it lights up most of the time more than likely it's just the connectors on the back of the radio being loose. Mine did that for a while - hit a pothole or a large bump and the display would no longer light up until you hit the dash. Mine turned out to be in the radio itself, which I just swapped out with a junkyard radio (and added cassette! oooooo!) More than likely it's just the connectors being a little loose.
The bulbs are replaceable, you may have to check with a ford dealer to get a new one. radio shack or something similar might even have one. First you have to get the special tool for pulling the stereo out. They are two u-shaped hooks, they will cost around $5 to $10 and are available at most autoparts stores. Once you get the stereo out lift off the top cover. The bulb should then be exposed, you can just pull the bulb right out. Pop in a new one, close the cover, re-insert in to the dash and set the time and pre-sets. The hardest part may be finding a replacement bulb. Good luck
Yeah, 92supercab is right on. When that happened with our radio it took forever to find a replacement bulb. I wish that I could remember where we got it so I could let you know. Good luck with this one!
I don't think you'll need a special tool to remove the radio for a '90. The bulb is in a plastic holder with two wires, you just turn the holder a quarter of a turn and then it pulls out of the rear of the display. The tiny bulb pushs into the holder. ...Terry
