I have seen numerous posts about the V10 and the PSD but what about the 5.4's? How long do they last with out major problems and what types of problems are common with the little 5.4. Are people happy with their 5.4?
It ultimately depends on how it is maintained. Any engine I would say that was built within the last fifteen years or so has the potential of lasting for well over 150k miles. And that may be an understatement.
Even if you drive them hard, as many trucks are, the life expectancy of the engine will far out live the body it is put into.
Just gave the wife my '99' F250 w/5.4 auto 220,000+ miles and still driving great. Every 3000 on oil and depending on enviroment for air filter. Now enjoying my '05'.
I sold my 2000 5.4 with 104,000 miles on it. No engine problems what so ever, no other problems either. I started towing 8 to 9K trailers with it (about 2 times a week) during the last 25000 miles or so. I though the engine got a little tired during the end. I switched to synthetic oil during this time figuring this would help keep things from wearing out, who knows? The engine used a quart of oil between changes (usually every 5000 miles) it did this when it was new to the day I sold it.
2002 w/ 80K, still running strong. We used my 5.4L a couple of times at work when my boss' 2004 FX-4 PSD was in the shop for oil change. He drove my truck and mentioned how strong and smooth the motor pulls. And that's coming from someone who drives a PSD every day, work and play.
I'm happy with my 5.4L and plan to keep it over 200K. At this point, I don't see anything stopping me from doing so. Like any engine, keep up on the maintenance intervals and treat her right... she'll put out for ya!
