EGR Symptoms?

My truck's idle while in Drive or Reverse started doing that stupid thing where it dies down until it sounds like it's going to Konk and then revs up... and repeat. Only this time...I am getting a lot of white smoke when it does it.

So...I parked my truck and unplugged the EGR. Immediately the idle changed...almost like it got air and started to breath again. I got into the cab and put it in Drive and no wierd idle. It just stopped doing it. No cloud of white smoke, etc.

I jumped out and plugged the EGR back in. The idle changed and when I put the truck in Drive...the idle started that die down and rev up with puff of white smoke all over again. So..I unplugged the EGR again. Jumped back in and put her in Drive. No funky idle.

My truck is a California model...so leaving it unplugged will get me a check engine light. That's not really an option right now.

What's the deal...maybe the EGR has an intermitten problem and needs to be replaced? Anyone else having this problem?

Unplug the EGR when the motor is turned off. Then start. It shouldn't throw a check engine light.

People's Republic of California trucks have a different flash. The PRC requires the CEL to come on and stay on if EGR malfuncitions.

The rest of the United States of America has a different flash.
