1979 F150 with floor shift 4-speed. Engine & trans ready to remove except I cannot get the shifter out. It looks like you push down against a spring & turn the retainer counter clockwise to unlock it. I'm not strong enough to do this by hand. Does anyone have any tricks to removing the shift lever?
No flames, but as I get older, I try to use the hammer less & less -- I was taught there is usually a trick, that most manufacturers don't design for hammer maintenance. I didn't believe it when I was young & it has cost me a lot of $$$ to replace things I have broken over the years due to lack of patience.
Now I try not to smack things with a hammer unless they are destined for the dump. There have been several mechanics with hammers that I've wanted to smack, tho.
Found a thread here that discusses making a PVC tool to push down the retainer. I think I'll try that first.
I watched a friend use a channel lock and pushed down on and then turned it with those. Seemed to work pretty good. I had him show me this because someone was obviously too impatient and just torched the shifter off. Oh well, the transmission was free minus the fact that I have to find a new shifter.
