While putting a new oil pan gasket on my '91 5.8l I had to pull the plenum off the intake manifold. What I discovered was all eight intake holes are carboned up. The front few are almost sludgy, you can scrape some off with your finger nail.
I have two main questions about this.
1. What is the best way to clean/remove this build-up, preferably without having to pull the intake manifold. Am I correct to think I am loosing power by them not being shiny clean?
2. What is causing such build up, and is it a sign of trouble or just normal stuff for a 110,000 mile engine?
I believe the crap you are refering to is the recirculation of exhaust into the intake by the wonderful smog crap, I have a 4.9 and saw the same crap in mine didn't expect that much but yeah it was pretty bad. If you clean it out it should run a little better as for a cleaner give your local dealer a call and maybe they will give you some info on a good product. I would imagine something they recommend would be a little stronger than something you purchase in a retail store, I would check them both out and go with what you think. Good luck with your truck
