Automatic Transmission Longevity

Hi! I am haven't posted to FTE in several years but am looking at buying my first powerstroke and I had a question for all the automatic tranny owners out there.

Either, how many miles do you have on your auto without any major trouble/rebuild or how many miles did your tranny go before major trouble/rebuild?

Any info on how much towing you did and at what weights would be helpful.

I am trying to decide between auto and manual.

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Eric

174,000 on my E4OD. If you are doing a loy of towing I would look at a manual transmission. I have an automatic because I found the truck and she's a beauty. Pros and cons to both I suppose.

Thanks Saguaro7.3. What year is your truck? I will be pulling about 6000 lbs about 2-3K miles a year which I wouldn't think is a whole lot.

I've got 196,000 miles on my stock E4OD now, and never even flushed the fluid out. I haul trailers regularly from about 5k to 14k and have never had a problem. I think a lot of it has to do with the program in the computer and how you drive it under a load. I definitely suggest a trans gauge to watch the temps, but at 6k lbs I don't think you'll have any problems.

1997 F-250 4x4 Super Cab. If that's all you're towing an auto would be ok. I tow more miles than that, but I take it easy and baby the truck when I'm towing.

165,500 on my 99.5, auto. Has pulled cattle trailers off and on and has always had a conversion tank in the back. My next one WILL be a manual no questions asked. Major torque difference. Auto's are more sluggish when starting out.

94,500 on my stock tranny and had to replace TC/Tranny/Input shaft seal on Transfer case. No trailers, just highway miles. Should not have had to replace it.

Thumbs up

My 99.5 has 140,000 on it. I bought it used with 86,000 miles and as far as I know it still has the original tranny in it. I pull from 4,000 to 12,000 lbs 4 or 5 times a month. I did change to synthetic tranny fluid shortly after I bought the truck. I also have a set a gauges for the tranny temp.
Good Luck!!!

I pull a 10,000# trailer about 8% of the time!! Been running a Hypertech Power Programmer III on stage 3 for the last 100,000 miles!!

I have 107,000 on my 96 and it starting to slip a little on take offs. I do pull, on occassion, a 12,000 lb. fifth wheel. I guess it time to start looking for a tranny. I wonder how many more miles I can get out of this tranny if I don't pull anything and keep my foot out of the throttle???

If you want a Auto tranny to last a long time; the 2 following things are a must:

1. Tranny temp gauge.

2. Proper flush intervals.

If it doesn't already have a tranny cooler, you definately need to get one. (All SD autos get one regardless of engine)

Heat is the #1 killer of a Auto, thus the need for a tranny gauge.

You change your motor oil, right? So why not change the tranny fluid?

A properly maintained Auto can out last a motor or two.

heavest weight in was at 26k and change, combined weight of truck and trailer.

maintenance: regular fluid change every 30k.

I have 3 powerstrokes all with a little over 200k on them and all auto's. The only problem we've had is the torque converters. two 99's and one 01.

I don't think that anyone has mentioned a good Trans cooler. What's up with that?
