PYRO guru's...

Good morning all! I got the autometer cobalt pyrometer in and decided to install last night. I was wondering what is normal temp range, it seems about 150* warmer than my 2000 7.3 and I have the 3.5" d/p into 4" dual exhaust which I thought was cooler. Also, it seemed to take a while to cool down to 350* This morning coming home I had cruise set @ 82 and when I got off the exit and stopped for coffee, I noticed it was stuck at 790-800*... I let it idle while I was in fixin the coffee, and it hadn't budged, and stayed there the entire rest of the way home. I flipped my lights on and the guage illuminated cobalt blue like its supposed to, so I don't reckon its the ground? Any suggestions on what it could be or what I need to look for?

Thanks so much.

Is it possible that you may have hit metal with the tip when you installed it? The tip or other piece touching something could explain the lack of cool down being shown.

something isnt right, everyone else on here with a pyro says that the guage drops pretty quickly when they let off the throttle.

Update!!!!!

I took the gauge out, and took the power lead off, I suppose to reset it, then I checked the thermocouple lead, and I have about 1.5 " outside the manifold, so It should be placed right about in the middle of the exhaust flow, so far its worked and hasn't stuck again. It still only gets down to about 350-400 idleing at the fuel pump before I shut down to pump fuel. Pulling the horse trailer and 2 horses this weekend, out I-16E it stayed close to 1000 and may have got to 1100 1 time, running about 2800 rpm, ~ 85-90mph.. (many GSP were trolling..)

I have the edge with attitude and also colbalt guages in trans and volt.. The pyro should cool down faster.. When i run my truck about 75 it runs at 900--950 as soon as i let of the gas it goes right down to 400--450 Than i have a turbo timer on my remote starter and it cools down to 350 in less than a min.. I would say the temp sending unit is touching metal or somenthing..

Sounds to me like it is working fine now. Mine sat between 350-400 depending on outside temps etc.
