Short?

I found my battery not holding a charge.
I disconnected a cable and used a test light inline and it light up.
What is the next step in identifying the short?

Pull fuses one at a time to see what circuit it might be in. If the fuses don't change anything unplug the alternator and check that.

Make sure the doors are shut when doing this testing. The dome light is a load, and will ruin your test.

Don't forget to disconnect the underhood light if you have one. Same as a dome light, it will give you a false test.

I have no underhood, and my dome light doesn't come on with the door opening.
This is a '78 F250.
I will work on it tonight. Thanks for the suggestions.

might be a bad alternator ,not regulartor. might be a bad diode r some thing. disconnect every thing off the alt. see what happens

I did what Botz244 sugessted and I saw no current.
I swapped the alt, and wiring, from my 'parts truck over and no current is flowing...
