Question - Replacing an Axle Seal

On my 88 F150 the inside of the right rear brake drum is covered with oil and grease. It smells and looks like gear lube or grease, but not brake fluid. So I think the axle seal is leaking. Have any of y'all ever changed an axle seal? How tough is it? What do I need to know? I have the factory manuals to help me.

It's not really tough. You have to remove the rear pan from the differential and turn the axle until you find the bolt holding the large shaft that is between the 2 axles, remove the large shaft and this will let the axle slide inward enough to remove the C clip holding the axle, then slide the axle out. It's been a while but that is the basic procedure. I would just get new lubricant for the differential, rather than trying to save the old. Don't forget the differential pan gasket and lube along with the seal. Good luck.
