I am in the process of replacing the rear brakes on my 74 Highboy Vin #F26YRU28517. I have new brake drums, brake shoes, wheel cylinders, and all internal hardware (I think) ready to put on. I have an axle seal slinging grease on the old shoes, so in order to do this job completely, I want to buy axle seals and bearings for both sides. The rear is a Dana 60, but since I'm not an expert at this, I'm not sure if I have semi or full floating axles. Someone please tell me the correct style of axle seal/bearing kit for my Vin #, and a reputable company who sells it. Any help is appreciated.
The D60 would be full floating. For the seals, make, year and model at your favorite AP store should do it. It is a common seal and likely in stock. I like AZ for bearings and seals... they carry Timken at reasonable cost.
The seal itself is large diameter. When I did mine ('78 F250) I didn't have a socket big enough to drive it in. A small square of heavy plywood worked fine.
With the D60, you will need to pack the bearings with grease before installing. Eventually differential lube will wash it off but the initial grease pack is needed to get it started.
