"My real gripe is when I turn the truck off, after it is warmed up, then try to turn it on again after about one minute, it sounds like someone is holding back the starter, then letting it go for a half second, then holding it again, then letting go, you get the idea. Then on the third try it starts."
Just like the post a day or two ago I took my 86 F250 460 to the shop, in my case because I didn't have the diagnostic equipment.
Anyway, never again.
They replaced the pick-up coil and a pig tail? I believe they had to pull the distributor in order to do this job. The truck idled and ran ok so I didn't notice right away,(about an hour later) but when you punched it, it just slowly started accelerating (bogged).
I took it back to the shop, they told me they had sub it out to an electrical shop because they couldn't find the problem and to take it there. I said I brought it to "you", you take it there or fix it. The adjusted the timing to 7 degrees adv tdc and it runs better, but it's still not as good as it was. I pasted the real issue on top because I didn't want to lose the interest of someone who really might have been able to help me, but doesn't like reading all the drivel.
Sounds like a weak battery, starter or a bad connection. Try starting it with the headlights on, and watch what the lights do. That works best for pickin out starter problems.

It could be either timing or hot starter theory. I have had a hot starter do similar things. Normally the heat sheild gets brittle and falls apart thus exposing the starter to the exhaust/engine heat. The question here is, does it happen when the truck is cold.
Now as for timing, if it is off, it could make it harder for the starter to turn over due to cylinder compression and I must say that a warmer engine could add to the problem in this manner.
The thing to do is find out who actually did the work and question them. Find out what they did and why they did it.
Good luck. Jake.
Thanks for the input. The timimg is at 7degrees Atdc, it should be at 8, according to Chiltons. Also it doesn't happen when cold, only when its warm. Earlier today it died all together, no sound when you turned the key, but I found the 4ga. wire terminal that connects the solenoid to the positive side of the battery, had arched, (melted, broken, pick one) itself off of the solenoid. Crimped on a new one and it fired right up. Of course it had been sitting awhile and had a chance to cool as I went to the store to get parts and I havn't run errands with it yet to really test it.
I'll keep you posted.
Roger that slikness,
I believe it is my "dyslexia", kicking in.
But just to double check.
BTDC-is before TDC or retarded and
ATDC- is after TDC or advanced Right?
