i have a 1980 Ford F350 with a 460 out of a 1983. it has a RV low-end cam, and a few other small modifications. when i got it, the timing was off a little bit, so i set the timing so it sounded ok, but it still has a little bit of a lope, and my dad is saying that it doesn't sound right. i double-checked the spark plug wires, but it seems fine. someone told me its supposed to do that, because cylinders 7 and 8 fire almost at the same time. is that right? does anybody have any ideas on what the timing is supposed to be set at? thank you in advance.
i have 86 f150 351w sticker says 10 btdc& i have mine timed at 15 btdc and truck runs good with no pinging.i always advance mine more than the sticker says until i hear the pinging.
Yes 7 and 8 fire next to each other. and one issue that you will occasionally see on a ford v8 is crossing firing between these two cylinders. The cause is usually the sparkplug wires running parallel to each other. The cure is to make sure the wires cross over each other a couple of times in there route to the plugs.
The rv cam will require a different timing than a stock cam and will also have a lope to it that will just be noticeable at idle. Advance the timing while vacuum line to the vacuum advance is disconnected at distributor till the engine is running smooth at idle then back it off till the lope is just barely noticeable.
it does barely lope right now, but my dad says it doesnt sound right. so you think it should be around 6 BTDC? if the engine tag says 8, and you think it should be advanced a little bit with the RV cam, so 6 sounds about right?
