Hi all im new to this so bear with me now. Ive got my hands on a 1990 f-150 iv6, with an 8ft box and heavy duty rear end ( so i was told when i was givin it). The only problem with it is that it needs a new Tranny, the previous owner (my dad, jerk) tore the crap out of the one it has it and he said if i can find a tranny and fix the truck it will be mine. So my question is that with this trucks its got a heavy duty tranny into her, again so im told, and im not sure what im supposed to be looking for as far as a tranny goes. So if anyone can possibly give me some direction to as what type and what not of transmission im to be looking for it would be greatly appreciated, thanks all
I would look for a ZF 5 speed, strong trans but pricey. On the other hand you can also look for a mazda 5 speed witch will be around half the price and should work just fine unless you plan on thrashin it. The mazda 5 speeds were stock in f150s that had the 300 and the 302. Im pretty sure the zf came mostly (if not all) in the f250's and f350's with the 351 and some with the 300 Both of these trans will bolt up just fine.
If its an auto...
My personal opinion would be to just sell the truck unless money is no prob for you. And if money isnt a prob just convert it to a manual ZF 5 speed
So a manual ZF 5 speed eh, is there alot involved in making it a 5 speed from an auto, or is it like put the tranny in and run a clutch cable and your done, help me out here.
