Hey, I've got a 93 ford ranger XLT 2wd, Been lookin for people to go rootin with and found a few. Was just wonderin if anybody else has taken a 2wd truck mudboggin and had very few or no problems like getting stuck or anything? I have right now on my truck is a 3in lift and some kind of mud tires...I dunno..lol please lemme know
I have never took a 2 wheel drive mudboggin...especially my 97 Lariat. I got it stuck in my front yard once after it had rained for 2 days and pulled it out with my Yamaha Kodiak 4 wheeler. I would say go for it but be sure there is someone there to pull you out.
Just beware of the added "strain" on the drive train from the mud and big tires.
I would think you'd be able to walk thru the mud better than your truck will get through it, but you never know till you try. Once your tires hit the mud, those front ones will slide around or just push mud, with the rear trying to push them, eventually(and probably rather quickly) spinning out, hence you are stuck. But it could still be fun, just gotta hit the mud pits really fast and use your momentum since you don't have 4x4.
With a 2x4 you need at least a real locker, not a lunch box locker that will only spin one wheel at a time. Have tow hooks front and back, high lift jack, 2x12 boards, and a friend with a winch.
Mud bogging is done in a 4x4, driving into the mud really fast and getting stuck is what is done in a 4x2
Be ready to dig yourself out, have a friend with a real truck, and hit the mud fast. You don't want the front end to bite and bury you. Maybe hit it ***** to the wall in reverse? It'll keep the "nose" up and spinning, but steering looking backwards at 15 mph with it wiggling all around might be a ::bit:: interesting.
As long as you have a pull truck handy, go for it! It's fun. The key is not stopping. Well unless you have the rear on a dry spot.
Getting stuck isn't so bad, one little trick is to slighty engage the parking brake (not too much). It puts drag on both rear tires, which will help your diff put power to both wheels. (Since one isn't free-wheeling)
Well my Dad said the he once apon a time had a 1977 Ford F20 2x4 supercab and put something really HEAVEY I cant remember what it was but he got around just fine somtimes got tru spots where 4x4s got stuck but I bet they where chebbys :-)
I remember a buddy of mine bought 86 ranger 2wd 4 banger 5sp brand new every weekend we would go offroading/mudding and we would almost never get stuck to see that little truck going sideways at full tilt thru two feet of mud was really a sight to see.Would have made a great ford commercial. we allways had someone with a full size truck around just in case.
A good driver can go places in a 2WD that a stupid 4WD owner could never dream of. Course...lockers front and rear, 35"+ tires, and the power to clean the lugs does make quite the formidible idiot.
Alot of my friends (real life) that 4-wheel actually just use low range to get out of the hairy situations that 2WD gets them into.

If you're driving in mud you wouldn't want to be adding weight to your truck, unless you know there is a bottom to the mud pit, which is rarely the occasion. In snow it helps a lot, but not sure in mud. But I've heard the same thing as well. My guess is the operator has a lot to do with it, as in the guy driving the 2x4 knows what he's doing compared to the not-so-brilliant guy in the 4x4 that thinks he can go anywhere.
Yea like my dad an my grandpa both say if you are going tre mud wiht a 4x4 keep it in 2wd an tell you get stuck cuz if you get stuck well in 4wd you aint geting out with out some help. and I geuss i might have goten the story wrong mabey it was in snow? I will ask him.
