Cronic Ford AODE problem?
Proud to OWN AMERICAN, 8 time ford buyer, happy to be a part of this forum as of today.... This is not a truck question, but this is the best forum ive found for newer fords to date. I have a 94 Cougar XR7 with the 4.6L V8 and AODE tranny. just rolled over 176,000miles today. 25,000 since ive had it. History is limited on this car, supposedly had a tranny rebuild at 140,000 miles. heres the run down...
from Park to drive... seems to have lengthy engage time.
1st to 2nd shift... excessive rev followed by slippage and soft engage
2nd to 3rd shift... once again excessive rev followed by an EXTREMELY abrupt engage
3rd to 4th shift... seems to shift normally
One other extreme, occasionally at highway speed (60mph) normal cruising, when i start to pass someone and go to WOT (wide open throttle) it seems as though the tranny has a brainfart and goes to neutral, engine revs to 5250rpms and before i can get my foot off the gas it engages in 3rd with a very very hard shift. sometimes barking the tires at 60mph!!! what is that all about?
do i need a rebuild? filter change? bad sensor? something out of adjustment?
A guy at the local Napa store told me that it could be the shift detent sensor he said that its round, on the side of the tranny, has a plug on it and held in by two 8mm bolts. there is a sensor thats attached around the actual range selector shaft, is this it, or is it somewhere else... there is a small leak it seems coming from the bell-housing is this causing it?
its up to snuff on atf, and the fluid is not discolored or glitery, or burnt
please help, im pulling my hair out, and its almost embarassing to drive
my parents have a 96 windstar that seems to have the same symptoms. although there is no leak on theirs and no 4th to neutral to hard 3rd passing problem
any and all advise would be greatly appreciated
