You have ESOF or manual t-case? If you have ESOF, you could have a vacuum problem, or the solenoids on the t-case need to be cleaned up (try that first, find the wires going to the t-case). Get any corrosion off teh connectors, and put some electrical grease stuff on em, and you should be OK. Move the hubs from Auto to Lock and then test the switch, if it engages, then the t-case is good to go. Then try Auto and try to lock it in. If it doesn't lock, start checkin the vaccum lines.
BTW - "electrical grease stuff" - That's the technical term
so i buy a 99 f250 v10 4x4, but it doesn't have a owners manual. call me stupid, but when i try to shift into 4H it won't engage. what do i do?
I assume you have "ESOF" or is it a manual lever control? If it's ESOF, and it won't go in, it could be several things. You should be able to turn the switch to "4 HI" and it should engage while moving. Does the dash indicator show a yellow light for "4HI" when it's switched in?? Try manually turning the hubs to "lock" (instead of depending on the auto-lock hubs) and see if it works then. If it does, your hubs are the problem. The hubs are vacuum controlled, and you may have a vacuum leak. If it still doen't go in with the hubs "locked", it may be a solenoid problem on the transfer case, or worse. Try the hubs first, and let us know.
well it turns out my t-case isn't even hooked up, but to make matters worse, while wheeling the other day i developed a leak in my tranny, so the high speed guy i am, buy some stop-leak any of course tranny fluid. i open the tranny fluid, break the seal and replace the lost fluid at, oh, 10 pm last nigh in my driveway, which is not lit ( and thats an important part). but once again, call me stupid, if i buy tranny fluid in a sealed container, should i not expect tranny fluid? come to find out, quaker state believes that water is good for transmissions because thats what i poured into my tranny. so after driving about 30 miles today, my 1st and 2nd gear start to slip. i call walmart and they say that they can't do anything for me and to call shell oil, the parent company of quaker state. so i try to call them and the are only open 7-5 central time monday through friday. so i guess in comparison, my t-case is a small fish.
