a4ld tranny problems
Hi all, was wondering if this sounds like the problem im having with my tranny.
I went and talked to a tranny shop[and the mech said he knows the a4ld] he told me without looking at it that i lost the direct clutch and it would cost $1000/$1200 to rebuild the tranny and sugested i didn't put that much in the van 87 Aero. what happend was i was driving down the highway and lost 3,4and od.after i stoped i found out i lost reverse to.I have a strong 1st and 2nd gear and reverse will work once in the morning then not again till the next day. fluid is fine and the modulator is fine too. engine has 111,000 miles on it and runs super. van is fully loaded and hate to lose it. HELP!

If you're ambitious, you can break it down yourself to see if the parts are bad. The worst that will happen is you'll have to take the parts in a box to the transmission shop for them to rebuild. What's a killer is that the problem is probably caused by parts costing less than $ 200.00.
I'm in the midst of my first rebuild and after spending more hours with the manuals and the A4LD than I do with most family members, feel I understand how it works at a conceptual level.
Make sure you get any parts back that were replaced and have a look at them. While it's torn down, they may find other things wrong with it. Have the torque converter checked if they can do that.
