Boy, you guys are gonna get tired of me!! My aforementioned F250 Lariat, 351W, E4OD, blows a little oil up in under the air filter. Replaced my filter with a K&N (was that a good Idea??) but I'll check it every 4 or 5 days and the crank case filter (I think that's what it is, the little filter under the main air filter. Hey, told you guys I wasn't a mechanic!!) will have oil on it. I've replaced this once in 3 months, but it's looking kind of oily again. There are a lot of miles on this truck(160k), but it runs like a top! I've had a couple of people (not mechanics) and one person (who was a mechanic) tell me that I might need a rebuild. But it runs so good. I have an occasional problem with the check engine light coming on at low speed for an extended period, but the truck doesn't run hot, and once I get back on the highway, it goes out. Doesn't seem to hurt anything. This oil thing bothers me a bit though. Anybody got an opinion. If you need more info, let me know. I REALLY like this truck (Hey, I'm from Mississippi!! We're supposed to drive BIG, HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS down here, don'tcha know!!!) But I'm too broke to afford a new motor or a rebuild!! By the way, I like this site. This gets addictive!!!
Is it using any oil other than what ends up on the pcv filter & air filter ? It seems to be a pretty common problem . Just make sure the pcv system is unrestricted . The K&N Filters are fine , Ive had one in my truck for 7 yrs & its great , I knock the bugs & dirt out of it every few months & clean it when it looks really dirty .
Other than what looks like a small (a few drops when it's parked) leak from some rear seal or another (looks like from between motor and transmission--maybe rear main seal), I can't tell that the truck is using any oil. There's no smoke from the tail pipe or anything like that. I replaced the pcv valve, though the tubing looks kind of cruddy. Don't know much about how to get to that.
You probably have some blowby, engine compression getting past the rings because of wear and tear, causing oil vapor to build up on the breather filter. I have seen engines last quite some time after noticing a problem like this. Make sure that the PCV valve is working properly. You may need to re-direct the vent tube from the valve cover to the breather. If not, oil will constantly build up in the air breather. I once took a piece of heater hose, connected it to the valve cover fitting and directed it to the frame rail, allowing it to vent off the oil vapor under the truck. The only problem is that this type of setup is not environmental friendly.
You could also purchase, (or build your own), an oil catch can. the line from you valve cover would be directed to the can and then another line would go from the can to the air breather. The can is designed to catch and accumulate the oil while the dry vapors would be sucked through the breather and burned through the engine. Good luck. Jake.
