I was in Wal-Mart and see that Fram now has a product out that is similar to the Fumotomo drain valve. It looks easier for it has a cap to cover it and it draind when you press an adapter up into it. Had anyone tried one of these yet?
I have a Sure Drain on my F150. The hose falls off when the hot oil goes through it so I don't use the hose. Even worse. Now I have to keep track of the small brass connector. I am thinking that the Fumoto is better. You don't need an adapter piece & hose and it flows out faster.
Some kits (newer ones maybe) have a wire clamp holding the hose on. I pulled the hoses off mine (have Sure Drain on all three vehicles) and put clear hose on instead. Appears Fumoto flows a lot faster, but I did not like the lever. If the lever were removable it would be better. Also a nice cap would be good for the Fumoto. Either way, it sure beats a regular plug.
Both products have websites, but I don't have the links.
If you have an oversized plug installed, it seems chancy that any might fit, but worth looking into.
I like the Fumoto drain idea, but I use a drain bolt with the magnetic tip for my Aerostar. What is everyone's opinion, in whether the magnetic tip is important to trap small amounts of metal particals, found in all oil, in every internal combustion engine? I trust you guys, and value your opinions... Ed
i love mine, have been using them on all my vehicles since about 3 years ago. i put a magnet on the oil filter to trap any small metal particles. the hose slipping off was a problem, plastic ty strap solved it. i store the hose with my filter wrench.
Since it threads in where the drain plug was does it prevent all the oil from being drained?
If you have a bottom mount plug, measure the depth of the threads on the hole in your pan and compare it to how far the threads extend beyond the copper washer on the sure drain. If it sticks up too far, some have filed a notch into the excess part.
If you have a side drain like my Fords do, then it will leave a slightly higher level than without the Fram Sure Drain. Not sure it is significant, but maybe could jack up the opposite side of the car to help the last bit out.
I figure if half a quart is left in a 5 quart system, that is 10% or like as if you were 300 miles into a 3000 mile OCI. Most of the time our oil is running a lot dirtier than that anyway, so it really probably doesn't matter. IMHO.
Personally I never saw the value. I mean, does it really take that long to unscrew the drain plug? Big deal.
Nope, but it sure is nice not to have hot oil running down my arm and into my arm pit causing me to invountarily sit up and knocking my head on the tranny, then slam back down into the driveway hitting the back of my head cussin' a blue streak that would make Master Chiefs around the world jealous all the while that hot oil is still just a gathering in my arm pit. (oh yeah everybody's been there, don't lie you know you have )
The Fumoto is what I have and I love it, no knowledge of the Fram so I can't say one way or the other there.
