I am pulling ym driveshaft on my 87 ranger 4x4 tomorrow to replace the center u joint in the shaft. It is obviously worn and I am getting the clunking and shimmy. Should I also replace the u joints by next to the transfer case and the diferential as well while I have it off?
I'm also pulling my driveshaft tonight to grease the slip yoke and am wondering if I should replace the u-joints while I'm at it. What's involved with replacing the u-joints?
It is pretty easy to do. It took me probably 2 hourstime of actual work. Once you get the drive shaft out you just ahve to unclip the c clips and knockthem out(I dont remember the exact procedure for this)...yourlocal autoshop should be able to do it too for a couple bucks if you dont feel comfortable doingit. The worst part of it for me was the cost of the joints (30 each???) Enjoy and goodluck.
A large vise for pressing the end-caps out and back in make the job a lot easier. It's important that you don't loose or crush any of the needle bearings in the end caps.
2 hours? On a Ranger? Naw. Maybe for an entire semi driveline. It shouldn't take more than a half hour. All you need is a vise, some needlenose pliers, and a BFH.

I have a tendency to work slow and take mytime being extra carefull....not to mention working on my 87 which had never had it taken off once things were a little frozen up which added a few moments of frustration. In comparison to the engine replacement I did back in August anythings easy.
