In an effort topget my '78 Crewcab IM legal I bought a running truck in worse condition for parts.
This truck is completely stock under the hood. All parts there, nothing gone.
One thing I have never seen before is a fresh air intake. The hose coming off the air cleaner goes into a plastic tube that goes out through the core support.
Is it rare or just takes a certain type of truck to have it? I pulled one of these setups off a parts truck. A garden variety 79 F100 Custom w/ a 302. Maybe I need to clean it up and put it on ebay. I left the radiator support in the truck when I got rid of it, but a person ought to be able to get around that if they wanted to.
While going through a yard looking for a diesel snorkel I actually saw quite a few of them. I wanted the large hose and air filter area for mine thus the diesel. The ones I saw had a much smaller diameter than the diesel and the plastic piece had a funny bend to it as I recall.
Masterbeavis is correct. The hose tears or gets in the way and people remove it. It is unfortunate that they do that since they just lost a lot of power and economy by doing so...
95% of the owners were clueless about the real reason that part was there.
Ford does not put any part on just for fun. That system was an expensive one also. It probably costs at least one person on the assy line as well as the cost of the parts.
I will definatley be using it.
When I go info for my IM testiong that thing will look completely stock under there. Only issue may be the truck used to have a 300.
yup, that was the way most of them came. I had a 78 351m with an oil bath filter, now that was on odd duck. That cold air intake was common and it worked, just watch the carb-heat vacuum controlled valve, where the tube goes down to the right side exhaust manifold. If that sticks, your breathing way hot air through a small hole. In my part of the country, we deal with carb iceing and that system prevented that as well. Good luck with the tail pipe sniffers. -Dale
I think the hose thing was on all of the 78-79 bronco's thats what i prefer, i have owned quite a few if it wasn't there or partially there you can see where it was. not rare just as the years goes by they go to the land fill
