302 - 302ho

I swapped a 69 302 for a 85 5.0. Is the flywheel weight different? I didn't put the engine in.

Yes. The 68 302 uses a 28 oz flywheel and the HO uses a 50 oz flywheel. Ford switched over in 81.

You should put the '69 heads and intake on your '85 bottom end... that would be the ideal combination...

Agreed but you might want to put hardned valve seats in the 302 heads.

I just got the project back. I am unsure if the flywheel is changed or not. When it starts it is so loud I can't tell if it is smooth or not, just rumbles. Im sure if it was the 69 flywheel on there it would be very rough engine, this seems to run smooth but just roars!!!!!!

Will my stock 69 headers fit the 85 HO engine??? I need something to make it bearable to tune the carb and timeing. This engine is not the final engine, just temp. I have the 69 pipes under the truck but they are a different size. I hate to have it towed to the muffler shop when something could be worked out (cheaply).

Also the engine idles fast... Any idea's??? It idles maybe around 1500??? I have the idle screw backed all the way out, throttle is as closed as it will go. I have a stock 85 302HO with nothing but the headers and a 2bbl carb off the 69.

You need to turn the idle screws in to lower the idle.

Matts, What idle screw are you talking about?? The curb idle screw is backed out so it's not touching but still idles very fast... about 2000rpm.
