I've read a bunch of the archives and posts on the forum but don't have a clear answer.
Has anyone done this swap or know what is exactly required to perform the swap?
My truck is a 1995 F-150 4x4 5.0 5/spd with hyd. clutch. I'd like to put a ZF in it. What model of ZF will match up to the 5.0/5.8 (301/351) bell housing pattern and to my transfer case pattern? What all do I need. I know the certain rarity of some parts but still would like a good list of the needed components.
By the way, my Mazda 5 speed has developed a slight buzzing noise as I enter into second gear and when leaving second gear. What might be causing it to buzz? I do know the remedy, ZF! I'm just curious about what is causing the buzz.
I have searched the archives and from what I have found a ZF-5 speed from a 3/4 ton 2x4 will bolt right up to your 5.0L. As for the Buzz.....probably just transmition age but I don't know much about this. Mine does the same thing in second gear and then as it goes into third it clicks. However it isn't very noticable. When going into reverse once in a while I have to let out the clutch slowely untill it grabbs because it wont go into gear right away. I think that if I ever have to replace a trans in this truck I will go to the ZF. Can't imagine why not. Sorry I can't give you any more information.
I think your best bet would be to find a F350 4x4 from the late 80's or early 90's. I believe the base engine was the 300 straight 6, which has the same bolt pattern as a 302.
I know what you mean about the M5OD. I just replaced mine with a NP435. My M5OD decided to eat itself awhile back, so I took it out and threw it away.

The ZF you want to look for is the S5-42. This is the small block that fits 4.9/302/351. The only differece in the 2wd and the 4wd is the back end of the tranny (obviously one fits 4wd and the other has the flange for the driveshaft). Make sure whatever you find has the right adapter for the transfer case, the shifter etc. All of the small parts can add up fast.
