May have goofed?

I am changing intake gaskets on my 390, did not keep the pushrods in order. Is it true that they are mated to a specific lifter? The rockers are of the non-adjustable variety, however the push rods appear to be the same length to the naked eye.

Get a straight edge and a feeler gauge. That will tell you. Just looking at 'em you'll be hard pressed to see .030" difference. If they ARE all the same, you lucked out and can just throw 'em back in. If not you're SOL.

If they aren't all the same length, you should order an adjustable length checking pushrod. See here. This will allow you to see what goes where. Remember you want about .020" preload on the lifters.

If it's all factory stuff, then I would guess you have no worries.
Check them with a straight edge(like Rusty mentioned). If they are all the same, you can throw them in any old way. Pushrods are not as picky for placement as lifters on a cam are.

It wont matter anyway for .030"......the lifter will pick-up that much and more!!

Put them back in as long as there straight!! roll them over a piece of glass.. if there's no bow in them and you have cleaned out the Oil pass's in the center?? you good to go!!

pushrods with oil holes?

RapidRuss, were are the oil passages in the pushrods on a FE motor? Is there a different oil system and pushrod that you run than everyone else with FE motors? I must be lucky with over 1 million miles with a FE motor and it had no oil passage in the pushrods. Damn that pre-run grease must last.

Carl....=o&o>....

Never been any oil passages in pushrod for FE's. They oil thru the one rocker stand, then thru rocker shaft, then thru rocker to pushrod cup and valve tip. I think Russ has got 521 on the brain..... . That 800 HP is just making mush of things up there....

That is why you can cut off the oil to lifter valley running solids. The oil splash is enough to oil lifter movement up/down, and heads get oil thru stands.

Nifty-neato.....

I've probably got a few long or short ones you can throw in the bunch to make it look good!

It's not really that hard to setup over/under-sized pushrods in an FE with non-adjustable rockers. It helps a lot to do it with new or already-bled-down lifters, though.
