Regarding the F-250, I bought the truck to pull a travel trailer with. 24ft Terry trailer with a GVWR of about 6,000lbs. Is the 351W a decent choice for this. Most of my camping is done within a couple of hours of home, but i may want to head to the mountains someday. How many HP should I be getting (I have no idea what rear end I'm running, and wouldn't know how to find out!) and how may pounds/feet of torque? Now that I've bought it and it's too late, did I make the right choice of truck/engine to do what I'm doing???
Gas mileage is, as you said, pretty bad--about 7.5-8.0mpg. But it has seemed to maintain this regardless of whether I'm pulling through town (Houston, TX last time I pulled it) or on the interstate. And hey, if I can't afford the gas, I should stay home, right??
If your 4 speed auto with OD is the E4OD, which it likely is. If it is it should show P,R,N,OD,2,1 on the selector and there should be an electronic switch to cut out the OD. The switch may be on the end of the selector handle or on the dash. Anyway I have the E4OD in my motorhome and bought the Banks TransCommand transmission module that firms up the shifting to reduce heat generation and make the tranny last longer. Also shifts nicer. Very quick shifts, but not jerky like a racing shift kit. Check it out at Bankspower.com
Yep, it appears it's the E4OD. OD off switch is on the dash. Thanks, Paul. I've been wondering if there wasn't something I could do to help the transmission. My wife had a book on the floorboard when we were traveling, and when she picked it up, she said it was hot to the touch. Laying there right over the transmission. I'll check out the Banks site! Thanks again.
I remember the heat on the floorboards too. They still get warm, but don't see as hot. Just make sure you really have the E4OD, because I am not an expert, but it appears you do. I was just talking to Banks yesterday about how my E4OD won't downshift until you basically put your foot into the floor. The tech said that is good as I have more control that way. I can manually downshift, and often do with the OD cutout switch. In contrast, my wifes 3.0 L Aerostar downshifts too easy and often two gears at a time or flips back and fourth if you slightly wiggle the pedal: too sensitive, poor control, drives me nuts. If you get the Banks unit, installation involves unplugging the electric wire harness from the tranny and changing three of the wires to the Banks wires. Need a tiny screwdriver to go into the harness block and hold tab back so wire will slide out. Takes about an hour to install.
I don't know how you folks have your trucks set up, but if I were to be pulling anything large for extended lengths of time, I'd invest in an auxillary trans cooler. I've seen many times where the stock internal cooler in the radiator wasn't enough to keep the trans alive. The tranny guy at work mentioned about not even going thru the radiator cooler. This way if something happens and the internal cooler fails, you don't get a 'strawberry milkshake' in your trans from the antifreeze and trans fluid mixing.
Just a couple suggestions!
