I have 2.73's in my truck, which is a 96 F-150 with the M5OD.
The truck has great acceleration, even thought it has the highest gear that came factory, althought I'm sure I get hurt in fuel mileage whilst driving in the city. The truck is also VERY fast on the highway, I can ping the needle off the speedometer no problem :P
I actually was in the situation where I had to race a new Mazda 6 from a red light at an intersection, and SMOKED him! I was impressed! (situtation: downtown Toronto, go to pass a car turning left at an intersection through the parking lane, hit the red light, car turning left goes through. Huge line-up of cars in the left lane, me stuck in the right lane with parked cars up ahead, either had to wait forever, or race through the intersection when the light goes green to hit the left lane, or otherwise wreck into parked cars! (just like all the Taxi's do!))
So I guess the massive torque created by the I-6 offsets the high gear, and the high gear allows one to really cruise at a good rate on the highway. I like it

I was talking to gear vendor yesterday about the possibility of an overdrive for my truck. They said running that with the engine running the same rpm I do at 55 mph I would be doing 70 with their overdrive unit. I would have to use Their divorced unit for my applications. I also called US Gear about thiers, they do not have anything that would work for me. The price difference between the two companies is about $300 IMO the Gear Vendors Unit is a better one. You do not have to lift off the gass to get it to shift.
"Have you considered an add on overdrive unit for the trans?"
Yes, but the price seems awful high and a gear swap seemed the best, based on the amount of money I have to work with. Still, with EFI, if I lower highway engine rpms and not below about 2000, I should gain some mpg. Dropping from 2500-2600 to a little above 2000 should promote better fuel mileage and less, unecessary engine wear.
I was able to get the ring, pinion, and all necessary shims and seals, along with a few other tid bits for about 240$, all new. The difference in price is a big factor, being a college student. Wouldn't there have to be some sort of drive shaft mod to fit in an overdrive unit?
Hi
can any one tell me what ring and pinion gears are in a 1989 ford bronco it has a 302 engen on the driver door it say 44 Axel. Im looking for a good set of ring and pinion gears 3.08 the ring gear has 43 teath and the pinion gear has 14 teath.
thanks:
Roushians, what RPM are you turning at 70MPH? I am thinking about changine the rear gears off of the 3.55s I have now. Also, what RPM are you turning at 90 or whatever the speedo pegs at?
how about 16" rims and tires- I put on 23585r16's- taller but skinny and in 10ply rated can pump up to 50+psi. Seems to help me. I'm looking at a gear swap as well as I can go 80 on the hwy here in Montana.
Hi
I have a 1991 ford 4x4 1/2 ton truck.with a 300-6 . I want to no if it' has a Dana 44 or Dana 60 differentail in to front. The wheel has 6 bolts not 8 ? I picked up another differentail for parts and they dont look the same.where doe's it say the part number (Dana 44)??? I need the carrier case for i can bolt my 3.08 ring gear to.
buckshot...if you've got a ford 1/2 ton, you should have 5 lugs, not six, on your wheels....chevy runs a six lug pattern...unless somebody swapped chevy running gear under your truck for some stupid reason...otherwise, for your front end, you should have the D44 TTB (independent suspension)....it won't be a dana 60 to my knowledge....but this would probably be a better question for the 1990's truck forum, as far as your front end carrier, etc...good luck...
I just finished swapping in a refurbished rear end in my truck this weekend. 3.55 gears, turning 31" tires driven by a c6. Excellent power all over the rpm range, just a tad high on highway. 2500rpm and keeping up with traffic at least But just off idle, I could pull a golf ball through a garden hose
Just a side note, before you swap in an overdrive unit, you may be ahead money wise by swapping a good, used overdrive tranny.
i'm figgerin to find a zf 5 spd in a wrecked truck, one of these days, and put that in place of my t-18 4 spd....should help my mileage at highway speeds...
Not sure, but I can check the next time I'm on the highway I just got my tach installed last week (check my gallery!), so I can check these things.
I do know that I do 2000rpm @ 75mph (which is about 120kph up here). I haven't gone faster than that yet in my truck, but I could try to see how fast I can get her and take note of rpm the next time I'm on the highway
