Is there any purpose to the fast idle solenoid other than to make the engine warm up faster? I'm thinking of disconnecting the solenoid, because I don't like it wasting fuel at a stoplight and fighting against the brakes. I don't even have trouble starting the engine with the solenoid disengaged, even in freezing weather. I just don't want to disable it, and then find out too late that there's some important reason for it to idle fast!
How soon after start do you arrive at a stoplight on a cold day. I do not see it wasting fuel but saving your engine from "wet stacking"....google those two. Instead of disconnecting completely think about a switch in place of the engine temp switch. You do realize you will loose IP timing advance and Fast idle which could affect your starts.
You should prolly wait for the poor thing to warm at least till the solinoid is off, before driving it.
Heck, your wife doesn't throw you out without your pants on, and a hot cup , in the morning, does she?
On a side note, the advance is independant of the cold start solinoid. Advance solinoid is inside the IP.
fonefiddy...... you are correct they are in separate locations on the IP ...BUT the are powered from same wire and operate at the same time. Together they enable good clean fast starts and a faster warmup. One operating without the other does not much good.

I wait until the oil pressure is up and it's idling smoothly, and maybe another minute or two if it's really cold, and then I drive it gently until the engine temp comes up. Letting it sit at idle for 10-15 mins until the solenoid shuts off seems incredibly pointless, and maybe would cause wet stacking! By the time I get where I'm going, the engine temp is well within the normal range.
If it takes 10-15 minutes to warm, you might want to check your thermostat and fan clutch. It normally only takes mine about 5 minutes, and I live in northern Minnesota. If I use the block heater, it only takes 2-3 minutes.
Use only an OEM thermostat. Either Motorcraft or IH original.
