I have a 1978 F-150 4x4 with a stock 4in lift. I want to put on an extra 2 to 3ins of lift. What is a good suspension lift I can put on that won't cost to much?
Body lifts are fairly easy but you need to find out if they include longer fuel filler necks, check your shifter linkage (you will need to fabricate something to extend it), how it will effect your 4 wheel drive shifter, and it will change the angle on your steering shaft since the steering box is attached to the frame. Almost always you will need to modify your radiator. Kits for new trucks have more of this. The kit for my 79 250 only had bolts and spacers. It actually took way longer and was a much bigger headache than the suspension lift. But body lift = about $60-$120 and suspension = $400 to thousands.
Not sure what you mean "stock 4in lift", but if you have a 4 inch lift and want to add 2 inches additional lift, then just buy 6 inch front coils...and you will be done with it. As a 4" and 6" lift both require dropped pitman arm and either a drop bracket for the tracking bar or an adjustable tracking arm. You should already have the 7 degree C-bushings if you have the 4 inch lift. Shocks may have to be changed out too, just depends on what you have now. Also the front brake line will need to be relocated with an extention bracket that usually comes in the kit. Of course for the rear, you change out the 2 inch lift block and install a 4 inch. That is usually how they sell them so the truck will sit level after the lift install...as FORD's sit higher in the rear by 2 inches for load hauling reasons.
Now, if you have a "stock" lifted truck, all the infomation above still works. Just go with the 6" coils, 7 degree C-bushings, adjustable tracking arm, relocate brake line with extention bracket, and new shocks. The best (IMHO) lifted suspensions for our year trucks are either SkyJacker or SuperLift. They offer the best ride and best quality. Here are the two URL's below...
