GM power steering conversion (54)

I'm looking at both the Toyota and GM conversions and have read all the posts I could find on this board. One unanswered question: If using the GM conversion, how much flexibility do I have in regard to the location of the PS box? My big block may cause clearance problems with the big exhaust, starter, and deep front-sump oil pan (drag link issue). It seems that the design would allow some flexibility in moving the box forward or back on the frame if needed, but I can't tell for sure. I'm a "bolt-on" kind of mechanic, and would like to buy a kit and do just that. (Wishful thinking.) The reason the Toyota conversion, my first choice, is not a slam dunk is that the stock steering box has been moved back on the frame to accomodate the bigblock. A custom draglink has used, and I'd like to replace this piece of suspect integrity.

Thoughs? My forearms are growing by the minute...

I'm in a similar situation, trying to figure out my truck's steering. I'm considering a steering box fron a late 60s ford 4x4. The Box mounts on tot of the framerail in front of the engine and the selector shaft extends down along the outside of the frame. It looks like it would bolt in. This would get the box out of the way, but it would require a custom steering shaft and a cuustom crossover-type drag ling. Niether of these should be too difficult and the crossover steering should improve handling to some degree.

I saw a 60 the other day with a gm box mounted on the outside of the frame in front of the axle. The owner said it worked fine except for a slight rubbing of the drag link
against the front inside of the left tire. He had a long steering rod snaking from the firewall under the wheelwell housing to the box. Had some type of gm column it it. I plan to get some pics of this at some point. He did not do it himself and did not know the particulars of it but said could find out.

Still looking for someone with experience with this conversion on a 53-56 F100 to chime in. Is their any flexibility - using the parts supplied in the available kits - to move the steering box backwards or forwards on the frame rail?
