This normally only happens in slippery road conditions, but if i apply the brake a little harder than usual i get an odd clanking noise from the rear and then a sudden loss in stopping power then it comes back rather quickly..........is this the rear ABS system at work? or do i have a bigger problem..........it's only happened maybe 3 times in the past month and it was all during rainy weather. thanks
Yo Josh! How Ya doing?
Yes, This sounds more on the normal side. When the RABS kicks in, the truck will feel like it is harder to stop. At least, that is how my 92' F-250 feels when this happens. It can scare the &$%# out of you. I have had the front wheels lock up one way or another on my truck when the rears do the ABS routine. We still have a lot of sand on the sides of the road here in Jersey. (Sand from winter storms). If you pull up to a stop sign quickly and you are in the sand, my front passenger side wheel will lock up and skid while the rears do the ABS thing. The driver side front wheel winds up being the work horse and slows the truck down. I am sure that the rear ABS has some credit in the slowing down process but it still seems kind of weird to me. It is something that I had to get used to years ago.
I would still check and make sure that your brakes are in good shape though. Good luck. Jake.
Lol thanks for the reply. I seem to have some serious hydroplaning issues lol........i pump the brakes a lot to stop this abs stuff from happening........i spose that can be either good or bad?
LAST EDITED ON 16-Aug-01 AT 10:01 PM (EST)[p]Becareful pumping the brakes with ABS. I have found that pumping can kind of overide the ABS action but it's not good to do it. You can damage the RABS valve. A costly thing to replace. Any manufacturer will tell you NOT to pump the brakes if the vehicle is equipped with RABS. Just firmly hold the pedal down and let the RABS action do the rest.
That's what they say to do but believe me, I myself don't like the feeling you get when it kick's in. Just a thought.

PS: Yes, I still have a tendancy to pump the brakes.
Have seen half tons with noisy erratic braking being caused by the self adjuster hardware coming disconnected in the drum and getting wedged between shoe and drum. Not a bad idea to take a few minutes and make sure all hardware in drums is secure. Good luck.
