I've been having issues with my wheel bearings, and I guess today I finally killed 'em! I'm out of town right now on a business trip, and on the drive down here (150mi.) both bearings started to wail like two cats in the night.
They are displaying the same 'symptoms' as others have had, like vibration/howling starting & stopping when hitting bumps.
ANYWAYS, I just got down here, and I'm not leaving till Tuesday. I've gotta drive my truck around (maybe 15-20 mi/day) going to and from our main office & my crappy hotel. Then I gotta make the trek back home!
Has anyone heard of catastrophic wheel bearing failure (wheels coming off, etc.) from bearings that have begun to howl??
If they are squealing, you better fix them now. It may be a lot cheaper that if you drive it. You can tear up a lot of expensive parts.
I have seen them take out the lock out hubs, or weld the races on the spindle, tear up the rotors, or tear up the wheel hubs on the front axle.
On the back axle the axle housing and wheel hubs are at risk.
Out of town shop rates are cheaper than any of the parts listed.
Also if you are having wheel bearing failure that often, something is wrong with some componet other than the bearings.
Dave is right, I wasn't incinuating that you should not worry about the problem. sorry. When my left one started making noise(needle bearings for the axel) I was on my way back from snowmobiling up north and I locked my left hub in therefor spinning the axel and taking the needle bearings out of the picture till I got home and had to put a hub assembly in.
Issues I was having beforehand was a howling when braking. Changed all front brake components, and narrowed it down to the front bearings (stock set w/62k on 'em). I had planned to swap them when I got back from my trip. . .and then this happens.
Driving to and from my jobsite, they didn't make any noise at all, but the problem still exists. From a time/work/money standpoint, I'm just going to have to cross my fingers and work on the truck when I get back home. I hope to heck nothing happens!
Brad99SD, hopefully locking the hubs will do the trick, thanks for the tip!
