25-45 degree mornings, 94' PSD, I have been having a hard time starting on mornings when the pick-up is not plugged in. I think I have ruled out the GPR, Glow Plugs, Batteries, Injectors. It takes about a 3 - 4 count for it to fire off, I get a burst of smoke, black initially for a split second then white to light blue. Smoke goes away as soon as I drive off even when motor is still cold (not smoking like when my glow plug harness was bad). Could this be related to the HPOP, truck runs fine cold or warm, no starting problems when warm. Starter sounds strong. When plugged in no smoke and no problem, fires right off. Using 15w-40 Delo. Fuel/Oil/Air filters serviced regularly. Great site and appreciate the knowledge of the members.
IF it starts fine when it is plugged in then I would rule out the possibility of a HPOP leaking down. they would leak down weather plugged in or not. a 3-4 second count when its only 25* out sounds normal to me. I have a perfect glow plug system, and synthetic and it takes that long to start mine when it is only 25* and colder. The split second of black smoke, then white to blue sound normal too. Why not just plug it in when it cold???
Sound like you have a well running PSD and you shouldnt worry about it, by the way
If it seems to be slower than what your use to it starting, you have checked the GPR, GP's and know these are good. I would be looking at the fuel heater in the filter housing. It could have shorted out and blew the fuse for the heater or simply quite working all together.
