I have a 1977 F250 Camper Special ext cab 2x4 with a 460/automatic...and am considering headers. I know there are issues with the older F250 Camper specials ( 67-72 ) and headers due to the anti sway bars...( correct? )...any problems with adding headers to this truck? Also, this truck as dual tanks ( front and rear under the box )...any issues with the front tank interfering with the exhaust? ....there is currently dual exhaust on the truck with the factory exhaust manifolds but it is cobbled up and needs to go!
Any headers for a 2wd with 460 should fit. I used Dynomax on mine and they bolted up just fine. I think the sway bars bolt in front of the front axle, therefore should have no affect on header fit. The front tank will force both exhaust pipes to run down the passenger side. I have a 77 F150 2wd with 460 headers and dual tanks. I used 2.5 inch pipe and flowmasters and the exhaust shop was able to run the pipes with minimal bends, but they do both run down the pass side. I have a big cam in my truck and the exhaust flows well enough to allows it to do 5500 RPM burnouts all the time!!! I did use an exhaust shop that did a lot of performance pipes.
People who put headers on their trucks should spent just as much effort thinking about the effect they have on starters.
YOu are correct....the headers on my 69 are within .50"-.75" of the starter...I need to do something about that....and the transmission lines and I am sure it will be the same story with my 77.
Thanks for the help!
any issues with getting rid of the steel x-mission lines and using all rubber? I can have hoses crimped here at work - any diameter, length, pressure rating I need...
The last truck I did (429) I used Hedman's and never had starter issues(maybe 1 a yr.).I think michael is talking about crossmember between radius arm bracket's and not sway-bar,which you can work around as long as you don't use long-tube headers.
I had just been told that the older body style camper special trucks had issues with the anti sway bar...I do see that the anti sway bar on my 77 is in front of the axle so it is not an issue.... $$$
IMO, If you want a set a headers that you can put on and not have to worry about, go for the L&L Headers. There pricey but worth the extra loot. Not to be knocking headmans but, I had a set of them on a 2wd 460 truck. They fit ok but the flanges were so thin, it was hard to keep them from leaking, even with good gaskets. I've never weighed them but, one of my L&L shorty headers for my Highboy feels like it weighed more then both of the full length Hedmans that I use to own. The choice is yours. Lifetime warranty, even against rust thru too.
Get you a good wrap for your starter to keep the heat away. Most good hot rod specialty shops have them. I think the one I got was made by Taylor. They are about 15 bucks!

Good advice. I *thought* I had a bad starter on my old '72 (turned out that the bolts which held the starter on had backed off) but getting to the thing was a PITA. The headers curl around like a big hand holding it.
I'd like to agree with the L&L being awesome headers and although they are pricey, they are worth it. I HAD a set of headmans on an old camper special. They fit, but they were so close to the crossmember, that the exhast shop(without asking) cut that crossmember for room.
The L&L's are worth the money and i like the exit, they go below the crossmember so there is no interferance. Go with the L&L's! :-)
