yep, i think it was the first ford with factory aluminum heads, they are infamous for popping head gaskets. in all reality though i personally see buicks moter as being better . sorry guys, but gran nationals are cool.
I got a frankenstein Capri, 79 RS started as a 4 banger, then the PO put in a 3.8 then later a 302. 302 was trashed when I got it, now the car is as follows,
1974 302
1966 flywheel
1985 T-5 tranny
1980 left exhaust manifold
1970 right exhaust manifold
1987 mustang spoiler
1983 Capri power bulge hood
1979 Capri seats(from another capri)
1895 3-row mustang radiator
1979 Granada fan shroud
Car looks pretty good though, gonna get it painted orange this summer.
I had both a 83 capri and an 84 Mustang both with 302 engines and 5 speed. My capri was acutally a better car with the exception of the rear end. It had the 7.5 inch and slapper bars and the mustang had the 8.8 inch and quad shocks.
The capri ran better and faster for some reason that I have yet to figure out. I prefered the grill and tail of the capri and the fender bulges were cool. I also had the bubble hatch.
The 7.5 isn't a bad axle, mine is still alive(wife can't understand why rear tires wear faster than fronts ). The 4 and 6 cylinder mustangs came with a 6.25 axle, while the 4 and 6 cylinder Capri's got the 7.5 standard. Learned that the hard way when I assumed mustang axleshafts would work in my capri. That reminds me, the axleshafts in my Capri are from an 84 V6 capri. Will the madness never end.

what year was the mustang rear. because they shouldve fit. ive never even heard of a 6.25. 79-93, if it wasnt a gt or v8 lx, it had a 7.5. axles from an 8.8 work to. believe me i know.. ive done just about everything to a mustang.
we race them on dirt down here 79-93 mustangs
my next project will be either a mustang or pinto with my merkur 2300 turbo engine.... did I say I like pinto and mustangs....
I wanna say it was an 83 mustang, but it was 4-5 years ago and cant quite remember, it had a 200 straight 6 in it. I had pulled the entire axle from the car, and took it home to swap the shafts, when I noticed it was smaller than the one on my Capri. The yard let me return the axle in exchange for the shafts that I needed. It might have been 6.75 not 6.25, but can't remember exactly. The housing was definitely smaller, and had fewer diff cover bolts. I have a spare 79 Capri 200/AT car in my backyard that also has a 7.5 axle. Every fox-body stang I saw in that yard had the smaller axle though(No GT's or LX's).
