I have a chance to get an NP435 and an NP208 already bolted together for $150. I'd like to switch the transfer case out with my slip-yoke BW1356 because the slip yoke is about worn out. I had a bad clunking noise, and I greased the slip yoke up real good, and the clunk went away for about a month. Now it does it all the time and greasing it doesn't help. My 1356 also leaks fluid out of every possible seal. No noises (yet) but I don't want this thing to blow up on me on the road one day.
I know I'll need a new slip joint driveshaft, but I should be able to score one at the boneyard and then have it shortened/lengthened to fit my truck.
Does this sound nuts? Does anyone have any comments on the strength of the 208? I know it's chain driven, but they put chain driven cases in F-350s, they can't be that weak. Is there a better way to go about doing this? I can get a BW1356 fixed yoke, I suppose, but I'm getting prices of around $400 with a 60 day warranty from the boneyards.
