I have an '88 F150, 302 (5.0) with EFI. Can the right valve cover be removed without taking the upper intake manifold off? I've got an oil leak and need to know what gaskets to get.
Might as well just pull the upper intake anyway. For one, I don't think the valve cover will come off with it on, and 2, when I removed my upper intake ('89 5L), the gasket was toast. Just pick up the upper intake gasket kit. It comes with the upper intake gasket, and all the gaskets for the TB. I think the kit I got was from Mr. Gasket and cost abot $12.

The intake plenum is actually quite easy to get off, you just need a torx head for the middle inside bolt. Disconnect all the vacuum lines from the plenum and the EGR from the plenum and the TB from the plenum and it comes off easy.
I just did this so its fresh in my mind.
Gaskets are cheap and easy to get.

BTW-Replace the PCV valve while you are there. Its in the back.
It can be done without removing the plenum, without too much trouble as long as you have a good set of extensions and a u-joint for your socket. Its a little hard to get out from under there, but it will come out. Pay attention to how you pull it out so you can get it back in easy.
But as the other guys say, it's not that hard to just pull the plenum off. Probably will go easier and faster that way.
I did mine also. The "Felpro" gasket was only $4.50 at "Parts Plus". I also changed both valve cover gaskets at the same time. Just do it and get it done - its not hard. You can also drain the oil from the valve cover in the upper intake at the same time.
