downshift?

hello, i put a post on here about pulling a fifth wheel and thanks for the replies, i have another question about towing, for those of you that have pulled a 30' fifth wheel, when going down a hill instead of using the brakes alot (cause i heard they will heat up fast) do you guys shift it into second gear (i guess i forgot to mention that i have an automatic tranny). the reason i ask is because i dont want to do the t/c mod and exausht brake thing, and some of you say that the tranny is a little weak in the psd, so i am just wondering is downshifting is ok for the tranny with that size of a load. in my old '90 chev shortbox stepside i would pull a 17.5' ski boat and would downshift all the time and never had a problem (allthough i guess the boat is a little lighter than the 5th wheel).

thanks

I think downshifting in to 2nd is fine as long as your rpm's aren't to high, and you will save on the brakes.

try taking it out of OD down a hill unless you are coming to a exit. and this way you wont turn the engine near the redline
