Engine wont idle when cold

I have a 1997 Exploer 4.0. The engine start up fine but it wont stay running until it's warm. I had to press on the gas pedal until it is warm up other wise it stalls out. Any idea's of the problem would greatly appreciated.

you might have the common problem with the intake manifold gasket. I had the same problem on mine 98 sport 4.0 SOHC changed the gasket and it work fine after that. one of the gasket was bad causing an extra vacum that is what is causing the problem. hope this helps you out

Also check the IAC... this is also a common cause for your problem. There is an excellent sticky at the top of the forum on what to check.

try better gas

I was buying gas at Costco and I started to have the same problem. Switched back to Speedway or Shell and added a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and haven't had a problem since.
