Need Help With Camshaft Positioning Sensor!!

rangerI recently replaced a head gasket in my 93 ranger 4.OL V-6 I then had some other problems like overheating but had fixed that with a new thermostat. I disconnected the negative battery terminal when I replaced the thermostat because I had to remove the Alt. After I was done the last thing I put back on was the negative battery terminal .....when I did the fusable link that runs to the starter relay on the drivers side inner fender smoked.....well actually melted? So whatever I assumed it was a surge didn't think too much about it I taped it up so I could get home I had the truck in a garage private not a shop it worked everything ran fine for about 5 miles then it just quit! for no reason I have checked everything has spark has fuel had the ICM checked it was fine all the fuses were ok. So after all this troubleshooting I'm turning towards the crankshaft positioning sensor I read these can just fail and cause the symptoms I had truck just quit.So what I'm asking is could this be the problem? this is my last resort! any help anyone can give would be great! thanks

Try pulling the codes, you have to start there at least.
