O.k. awhile ago, when it was cold, I posted a thred about my truck idling high. Today, the truck has decided that it doesn't want to idle high anymore but wants to idle so low that when I stop it stalls and when i just let it idle it chugs and when I shift up and the rpm's drop it studders. My roomate says its th carb because there was black smoke when the truck started up. They said the high idle was the carb when I posted before. would it change symptoms? the plugs are good we just checked one but should we change them anyway? I put in 20 dollars of gas thismorning, would That have anything to do with it? and It was really warm with lots of puddles today of which I had to drive through. Any ideas? And if its the carb how easy is it to replace if Ihave to?
Its got more to do with the two Idle Air set screw at the base of your carburetor.
I assume you have a V8, and that its a factory two barrel carb, being as how you didn't give us any of that info .
Taking the air cleaner housing off will give you a good look at the carb, and at the base of the carb are two screws, about 1.5" apart. They have a spring on them too. You need to turn them all the way in, not tight, but all the way in. Then turnt hem two complete turns out, evenly. Try to start your truck, it should start right up. If not, turn the screws out 1/4 turn at time until it does. Adjusting your timing may help with the idle, you can do that by ear, just loosen the hold down (its a 9/16 bolt) and tap the distributor to the passenger side a little until the idle improves.
If you have an Inline six, you might want to stop in the inline six or carb forums... I don't know much about them.
Ok sorry I'm not a mechanic. The truck is a v8 302 with the factory carb. The automatic choke pull-off has been removed, a long time ago, nothing has ever been changed on this truck. I have its whole history. thanks for the info tho i will give it a shot tomorrow, would the water have anything to do with it? and it keeps flooding itself.
