300 to 460
entitled "Why Would Anyone put a 300 in an F-250" .
I think the real question whenever swapping motors is
what will I use this thing for? I run a 300 six and at first
I wanted to rip it out ASAP. After driving it for awile I realized
that It did everthing I asked it to (except win a drag race
)The way I see it, when these trucks were bought new, They were
ordered with an engine for what the owner intende to do with it.
If your needs are similar. then dropping in a big gas guzzing V* would
be a waste of money. This isn't to say I don't like 460's. A buddy of mine has a '78 with a modified 460, let me tll you that truck will RIP! Even with a 6" lift a
35's that 15" wide. The down side is the 10mpg with a light foot.
Back to your original question, what for a transmission do you have? If
you have a M/t then you can just swap the bell housing, if it's an auto then you need the whole thing. A C6 from a 351M/400/429/460 will work.
For headers a lot of people go with the L&L fenderwell exits, which will rust/
corrode dispite their claims. Go with the powersteering pump from the 76--77
models(not the saginaw used on the 78-up). My buddy ran into this
problem when he swapped in his 460. Most importanly pay attention to the details. It's always the little things that bite you in the ***.
money can you afford. As zwinstead said a top loader may work. Or,
if you have the $, you may want a Richmond 5 spd, Thats if you want
a M/T. You may be better of with a C6 with HD clutches, manual valve
body and a 2500 rpm stall torque converter(depending on gearing, cam,
powerband, ect.) For street roding I wouldn't go steep on the gears. That
460 should provide adequate torque to get you moving. I would go with
3.50-3.73:1 gearing.
