Has anyone out there fitted a ford motorsports 460ci crate motor up with an f150? If so did it bolt right up or did you have to get custom motor mounts made? Where there any clearance issues? How much time, money and sweat was involved? Would you do it again? At last, what transmission did you mate it to? Thanks in advance.
If you get motor mounts and trans crossmember from the same year it should drop right in. I am sure others will give a more detailed answer but it should not be too great a feat if you have or are familiar with engines too a degree. You would have to check and see which accessories you can reuse and/or what brackets you would need to set them up on your new block. I am assuming you have a sbf engine in it now or even a six so you will probably have to or should upgrade ignition now so that is something to think about. The odd and end things will add up faster than anything if you don't already have them or are a good junkyard searcher. Sit down figure up everything money wise and then add 1-2 thousand on top of that just to be safe. Trust me it is always something. Definitely have to have a BB bellhousing if not a new tranny to make it work. Good luck, hopefully it will work out you will like the end result if mpg is not an issue
Check out www.jobriteauto.com I know they do some cool things with trucks and I also know they have a early 80's f150 that they have put a 460 into. They have all sorts of email addresses and they reply fast so I am sure you could ask them questions. Hope this helps.
I have no idea why ppl swear by L&L. I did a 460 swap in my 87 f150. Just went to the ford house, and bought all f250 460 stuff. Slid right in, not any problems. Hooker makes headers for aplications to. Which also no mods. Took me about a day, i had it dropped in, and pretty much ready to fire up. Besides eletrical. Only thing i would worry about is that you have a(if auto) the c6 with the wide bolt pattern. The one of my I6 i had in there was more narrow. and wouldnt work. Thats about it really, get a bigger raidaitor.
78 F150 400m, c6, holley carb and intake, cam, and some other goodies
87 F150 460, c6, 2800 stall converter, eagle hbeam's, eldelbrock intake carb, crane cam sat spec., balanced and blue printed, 10.5-1 compression, heads ported and polished, full msd setup, everything but roller, aluminum heads, and laughing gas(as for now).
I'll probably go with a c6 auto but if I wanted to go manual what would be a sturdy transmission that would hold up? Keep in mind that hte 460 crate I'm looking at is rated at 485hp. Thanks :-)
Go with the c6 but put a sturdy shift kit in and make sure you have an aftermarket cooler for it. 485 hp is tons is your rear end and everything gonna hold up okay?
I'm kinda worried about the rear-end. I might wait for everything until I have enough money for a 9" rear-end as well. I'm also considering a gt-40 5.8 crate motor. It's rated at 385hp and is only 9.0:1 compression. How much do you think a shortbed regular cab f150 w/351w would weigh? I'm looking for a good reliable truck to atleast run in the mid to low 13's.
All sounds good..... your call. Personally, I'd be looking at the 351 crate motor for the power versus weight with the ability to still run pump gas, but that's me. I haven't run the power to weight equation (I think I may have it in a book somewhere) to try and figure out whether you'd get into the 13's, but I would guess that 385 bhp would get you close if your truck doesn't weigh too much. Again, though, putting it in the 13's with a 460 would only be a matter of putting the right parts in the engine, and I can't imagine it would take too much effort!
I am reconsidering the possibility of going with the 351w crate. I might also build a 351 from the ground up. Does anyone know how much a shortbed regular cab f150 weighs? Also, if I decide to build a 351 what shortblock should I use? How much power could I reliably make out of the 351 for under $5000 and still be able to run 87/89 octane fuel? Thanks again.
I think for under $5000 you could build a pretty sweet 351w. I have an 84 long bed reg cab and I am running about 300hp except I have no idea how much was put into it. If you can get a solid used one and rebuild it to the way you want it I think you could surpas the 385hp that the crate engine comes with. I have a Canadian Tire Catologue that has a Ford Motorsports 351w that is 385hp but I have no idea what the price is, What is the price on the 351 and the 460 you have checked out?
If you wanna build a strong 351 cheap use a windsor block, preferably a late model mexican block (they had a high silicon content that makes them stronger). Then throw a set of set up Cleveland 2V heads on top. From then on out it's up to you.
