Does anyone know the proper way to replace the differential pinion seal on an 83 F100 w/ 9" rear (3.5ratio)? I'm also th
inking of changing the bearing as well. Thanks
changing the pinion seal is not hard. Unbolt the driveshaft from the axle and leave the other end bolted(make sure your parking brake is on or the wheels are chocked since you are disconnecting the axle from the rest of the drivetrain)to the tranny. remove the nut in the center of the pinion yoke. At this point the yoke will slide out if you pull on it. pull it out and be aware that fluid will pour out. Take a cold chisel and a hammer and work the chisel around the seal lip until it pops free from the face of the housing. then just remove it and clean the area. to install the new one you first have to lubricate the rubber lip with gear oil to prevent dry start and damage to the seal. you need to make sure that the seal goes in straight when you hammer it in. use a very large socket or a piece of wood with a hole in it for the pinion shaft and use it a a seal driver. drive it in flush and bolt everything back up. A good manual will show an exploded diagram of the pinion seal you should take a look. The bearings are a different a matter you need to check them first they don't often go bad and are difficult to replace.

That's the backyard procedure.
The RIGHT way to replace the pinion seal is to remove the axles, then remove the driveshaft & yoke. Remove the seal, install the new seal, lube the seal with gear oil, then install the yoke, but DO NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT. Snug the pinion nut, then measure pinion rotating torque with an inch/lb. torque wrench. Gradually tighten the nut until you reach 8-14 inch/lbs. rotating torque. Install the driveshaft & axles. Refill w/ new gear oil & check for leaks.
I understand most of the instructions except for the torque rotation. So there is no torque value on the pinion nut? Also, would these instructions still apply if I have to change the pinion bearings? Thanks for any info.
