well boys and girls.. the problems begin again,, went to leave work and my truck wouldnt start,, I had one of the guys turn the ignition on while i was under the truck and i could hear the fuel pump turn on and prime,, so im guessing its not fuel.. she cranks just fine,, although with extensive cranking, some of the wires on the solnoid start to smoke,,, but i dont think that is my problem either ,, im assuming it is a spark problem, seeing that all the fuel pumps are new!!!! but who knows.... So to make a long story short,, im going to go and try to get her running around 9am if anyone has any suggestions as to what to check ie coil... pip,,, module... etc etc i would apprechiate it ...
Similar thing happened to mine. I have an 86 F-250 HD 4x4 with a 351W, C-6 trany. Anyhow, It wouldn't turn over, just kept crankin and crankin, started smelling fuel, and saw it flowing through the glass housed filter next to my carb. Nuthin, thought I had faulty plugs so we pulled them and stuck a key in and grounded it to the engine block sparked, so i knew that wasn't a prob. Getting fuel and spark. So then I start looking at ignition and coil. Found my problem. Turns out one of the wires to my coil just up and disconnected, it was old and stripped. So my guess is it's got to be either ignition or coil. The Durasparks have been known to have their share of trouble. So what I would do is if money is not a huge factor, go get yourself an MSD 6A Ignition module and an MSD Blaster Coil. These are extremely reliable and create more sparks per firing cycle than the stock Duraspark, something like 6 more, which means that normally in a cycle when 6 or 7 cylinders will fire with the duraspark per cycle, all 8 will fire in the cycle with MSD, plus I heard the spark is hotter and cleaner, which is obviously good.
well i drove all the way back to work with my other truck ,so i could mess with my f-250 and try to get it running,,,,
guess what ,,,,
it started up, after one try,,,Profanity Removed,,,
so has anyone have any ideas on what may have caused this,,
by the way ,, my truck is a 85 efi 302 f-250 4x4
It could be your TFI (Thick Film Integrated) ignition module. As you may have heard, Ford is involved in a recall of these. Normally, when your engine has warmed up, these will fail by the internal diodes and circuits expanding (with heat) and breaking contact. When the engine (and module) cools down, they'll make contact again and allow the truck to fire and run. I've also seen them go under other circumstances, including causing the truck to drop cylinders, misfire, etc. If your's is original, it's probably due for replacement. You might also check your stator and pick-up coil (inside your distributor, under the rotor). I have the same year and engine, and mine shut down a few years ago at a red light. After ten minutes of blocking traffic, it started and took me three miles before dying again. It turned out to be a faulty stator in the ignition, but was very symptomatic in its last hours, as you have described.
