The coil by the blower on my 2000 PSD is really clogged up. Ford did not put any type of pre-filter in the system. I can't imagine running my furnace without a filter on the return air. Anyway, I am not getting near as much air flow as in past. I have taken the blower off and looked at the coil, but there is not enough room to spray coil cleaner acid in there and clean the fins on the coil. Has anyone taken the coil out to clean it? Thanks
Could you get top it with a garden sprayer and a wet vac? I used to do this in HVAC work for the real tight spots, but none of them were as tight as under a dashboard.
Your talking about the evaporator coil. You would have to evac and drain down the hole system in order to get the Evap out of there. Not sure the procedure to remove the evap but its usually NEVER easy. As for using acid I would not use it unless it was removed.
Yes, I would not want acid in the air ducts, that is why I asked if anyone had taken out the coil. I got a price from local Ford dealer of 275.00. I usually do not even think about having service done at a dealer , but nobody else wanted to touch it. Does that price seem reasonable? I did not think it was that bad. I want to do it soon. Late spring and summer are humid as he!? in Indiana. THX
I do a little work on the side and I could easily see someone charging 275 to R&R the evap coil. I have cleaned LOTS of coils with coil cleaners and I have not have any bad results with residue in ducts or corrosion damage.
I mentioned using a shop-vac. Use it to extract the acid as it foams up and pushes out the crud out. Don't flood the whole coil but do a little at a time and it's not too bad. After you have sprayed the whole thing you can give it a fresh water rinse. You can also put a little baking soda in the rinse water to make sure the acid gets neutralized if you miss it. Keep the drain open and clean and the wet vac running and you won't flood the interior.
On the other hand if you can spare the $275 you can eliminate the hassles of any accidental breakage, refrigerant leaks, etc.
Either way you'll be glad it's done when July gets here.
